Decide what you want to change
Tell us whether the goal is a different color, a decorative finish or an update to an existing counter. Photograph the full surface, front edge, backsplash and the area around the sink. Identify any loose material, swelling, cracks or previous repair.
If the layout or supporting structure needs to change, describe that separately from the coating request. Ask whether the existing surface is suitable before choosing a finish. A coating discussion should not assume that underlying damage has been resolved.
Make the design and edge details visible
Bring references and explain which features matter: color, contrast, pattern scale or sheen. Ask whether a sample can be reviewed and how pattern variation will be handled. Discuss the front edge, inside corners, backsplash junctions and the finish around openings.
Clarify the limits of the quotation. Ask who is responsible for any sink or fixture work and whether removal, reconnection or adjacent repairs fall outside the coating scope. Do not assume those tasks are included.
Ask for care instructions for the actual product
Countertop coatings have product-specific instructions. For example, Stone Coat's countertop guidance recommends protective pads or trivets for hot cookware. The relevant instructions for your project are those for the coating and any topcoat actually selected.
Ask about cleaning products, direct cutting, hot items and when normal use can resume. If the countertop will contact food, request documentation for that intended use and the conditions that apply. A general description of epoxy does not establish the properties of every finished counter.
Plan around the room being unavailable
Discuss when to clear the counter and when appliances or personal items can return. Explain if the space contains the property's only usable sink or preparation area. Agree on access needs and return-to-use instructions before rearranging the household or business around the work.
Ask how future surface damage would be assessed and what ongoing care is expected. Keep the approved design and product information with the final scope for later reference.
Send the details that define the project
Include your address, approximate counter dimensions and current material if known. Have photos of the surface and edges ready to discuss during follow-up. Say whether it is a kitchen, bathroom, bar or another setting, and mention the design you want to discuss and any work already planned around the counter.
